Bears and Treestands
By bowhunting biologist Wade Nolan
I have been on some great bear hunts where the scariest part wasn’t walking out of the forest in the dark when bears were prowling around, but climbing into a treestand that was built out of skinny spruce poles…probably back when my dad was a kid. The only thing worse than having a bear climb up to my treestand would be falling to the dirt next to the bait pile.
There is a way around this dilemma. Just like you take a bow on a bear hunt, do like outdoor videographer Tabb Justus did a couple of weeks ago and take a treestand solution with you in your pack.
Tabb took a FallGuy 20 foot retractor and safety vest to Alberta and attached it above his treestand on the first night. He was attached from the ground up and back down every day until this full size black bear wandered in…and after letting the wind out of this big guy he safely climbed to the ground without ever being exposed to a treestand fall. The 20-foot Retractor is available from www.fallguysafety.com This fall when you start chasing whitetails you should consider attaching a FallGuy retractor above each of your treestands…and hunt like your life depends on it… because it does.
